Now, I’m a lover of organisation, so here’s what you need to know about the Brandcology Custom Branded Squarespace Website Design process…
+ What do I need to provide you with?
Essentially - everything you want to me use on your website, including things like:
- Copy for each page
- High-quality, branded imagery
- Your main logo & favicon
- Your brand guidelines if you have any, if not, the fonts & colours you use
- A list of the software you want integrated with your website, such as a CRM, mailing list, scheduler etc
- Social Media account names/links
If you don't have any of these elements, don't worry, we can work on them together or I can recommend other experts to help you.
+ How do we share information?
I'm so glad you asked! As you can imagine, there is LOTS of content flying around on a website design project, so it's important that we're organised.
To that end, I'll send you a personalised Trello board, specifically for your project. Don't worry if you've never used it before, it's a really simple (free for you to use) tool designed for project management. It allows us to keep specific conversations in their relevant threads so we won't need to clog up our email or lose track of the latest version of something.
Within the Trello board will be a link to your own folder on my Google Drive. It has sub-folders for you to upload content into, such as images, branding, copy etc. You will use this to share your content with me, again, keeping everything in one place.
+ What if I don't like what you've designed?
Say whaaaat?! Haha, don't worry - my website design process is designed to ensure that you're as involved as you'd like to be and you won't just be presented with a website at the end!
This is a collaboration. It's YOUR brand and YOUR business. I'm here to bring it to life for you.
Yes, of course I'll have suggestions on what I think is right for you and your target audience and I'll have more than one or two ideas about the design, but ultimately my job is to create the website of YOUR dreams, for YOU.
The goal is to have you bursting with pride and desperate to get promoting yourself (again).
+ What's the process, specifically?
The whole process takes 6-8 weeks if everything runs to plan (if you miss any deadlines for any reason, the project completion date is likely to be affected, but we'll discuss this if it happens).
- To start with, you'll complete a thorough design questionnaire where you can share preferences and even inspiration boards.
- Then I create a first draft and we go through it together - this is your first opportunity to request amendments.
- I then implement the changes, make tweaks and generally finesse the whole thing so it looks "just so". Then we speak again. On this call we get out the fine-toothed comb and get as picky as we can, to put every single element to the test. Any tweaks that are needed happen next.
- You're then ready to go live!!!! We have one last call to triple check that everything is prefct and voila - you're on your way!
- The final step is your training call - this is a recorded zoom call for 30-minutes that shows you how to update your website - swapping imagery, updating text, adding new packages and blog posts - the everyday things you'll want to be able to do yourself, so that you're in control of your own site and can keep your SEO activity going.

That all sounds great, but how do I know if Squarespace is the right choice for me?
+ Don't Squarespace websites all look, well, like templates?!
That is a risk with any templated website whether that's a pre-designed Wordpress website, Wix or even a Squarespace one!
At the end of the day, if all you're doing is swapping imagery and copy, adding your fonts, images and logo then it's going to look pretty much excatly like the original template, which of course could look very similar to someone elses.
That's why many business owners choose to work with a website designer for a CUSTOM, BRANDED website. Yes, using a template is cheaper and that might be the right decision for you right now. To achieve a truly unique look, you'll want a custom design, which is where Brandcology comes in.
+ Is Squarespace any good for SEO? I've heard it's not...?
That may have been the case, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but if it ever was, it's ceratinly not any more!
Squarespace offers a wealth of ways to optimise your site for Google and all without pesky plug-ins!
Don't believe me? I went to the number one spot in a matter of months after switching my previous website to Squarespace and giving my site the TLC that Google loves and that was in a VERY crowded marketplace - Personal Branding Photography in Bristol!
Naturally, I'm now having to do the same with this new one, but all it takes is know-how and putting the effort in, the same as it would be on any website platform.
+ I've seen some funky features that don't seem to be on any Squarespace template I've seen...
Welcome to the world of custom code!
Custom code (CSS) allows little details to be tweaked and personalised outside of the standard design formatting options.
A word of warning though - the Squarespace support desk is AMAZING but they'll only help you with standard templates, so if you make a change that causes your code to fall over, that's outside of their remit so you will have to work with a Squarespace Website Designer to fix that for you, which will of course be an added cost.
Another thing worth bearing in mind about CSS is that you need to be on a Business Plan or above. CSS is not an available feature for Personal Plans on Squarespace 7.1.
+ How do I keep my Squarespace website secure?
As long as your Squarespace subscription is up to date, the inbuilt SSL certificate will stay live. No annoying expiry dates catching you unawares, leaving your website visitors with a scary notice about how your website isn't secure and having to pay an agency to renew the certificate - it's all included in your subscription, as standard.
+ Do I need to bolt things on to get it to do what I want?
Probably not. Squarespace is a purpose built website platform that has integrated functionality, whether that's an online shop, mailing list, SEO optimisation or a class/appointment booking system where payments are made and contracts signed all in one go, it's all avaialable in-house, meaning it's all designed to play nicely with each other and importantly - one part won't fall over if something else gets updated! That said, it can be linked to other software and websites if needed, let's have a chat about what you need to make sure it's the right choice for you.
+ Is Squarespace simple to use?
Mostly! On-page updates are super-intuitive and after our (included) training session you'll be feeling confident to make updates yourself.
Some "behind the scenes" elements can feel a little more complex as changing some settings will have site-wide impact, the same will be true for adding or amending custom code, but for the vast majority of small business owners, Squarespace offers a very flexible, very user-friendly solution to the need for a powerful, truly mobile responsive beautifully designed website that's great for SEO and importantly, easy to manage.
+ Do I need to pay for ongoing support?
No! That's the beauty of Squarespace - they have an AMAZING 24/7 helpdesk that you can access free of charge, so if you get stuck at 2am when I'm hopefully sound asleep, one of their tech geniuses will be working in one of their worldwide offices.
Naturally, if you want me to make amendments/fix elements you've accidentally "broken" after we've published your website, naturally, that comes with it's own invoice, which we'll agree up-front.
